Latin American Aircraft Accidents Double Global Average.

A report released recently by the International Civil Aviation Organization (“ICAO”) indicates that in 2011, the rate of commercial plane crashes in Latin America was double that of the global average.

The report cited 15 major airplane crashes in Latin America, a rate of approximately 1 in every 250,000 commercial flights. Only Africa and the countries of the former Soviet Union had significantly higher aviation accident rates.

Luckily, no one was injured in any of the plane accidents cited in the ICAO report.

The report’s authors identified pilot error and mechanical problems as the main causes of these plane crashes.

Private airplane crashes in Latin America, in which numerous people died, were not included in the study.
